The Characters I Love to Read (and Write)

I’ve always believed the best stories begin with characters you can’t stop thinking about.

Not just the ones who are witty or strong or perfectly put together, but the ones who feel real. The ones who somehow feel less like fictional characters and more like people you knew once, or maybe people you could have known.

Because the characters that stay with me the longest have never been the ones who have everything figured out.

They’re the ones with emotional depth. Characters who are flawed, layered, messy, healing, and still figuring themselves out while finding their way through everything life has placed in front of them.

The ones learning who they are while becoming who they were always meant to be.

And at the top of that list has always been a strong heroine.

Now don’t get me wrong. Strong doesn’t mean without struggle, because these types of women absolutely do.

They’re the ones who have experienced true heartbreak, real pain, real problems, and sometimes even trauma.

But what makes their journey so special to me has never been what happened to them. It’s what they choose to do with it.

It’s the way they take their history and use it not only to overcome whatever they’re facing, but to allow it to shape them into something stronger in the process.

The women who rebuild themselves; those are the women I love.

And aren’t we lucky enough to come along for the ride? To watch them be resilient while still being soft. To see them be brave and vulnerable at the same time. To watch them carry heartbreak, fear, hope, and strength all at once.

Because that feels real to me.

That feels human.

The woman we all aspire to be, because true strength has never meant being perfect. Instead, it’s choosing to keep going even when everything seems to be against you.

And what’s a story of growth without someone arriving at exactly the wrong time… or maybe the right one?

Because somewhere along the way, every unforgettable heroine seems to meet a little trouble.

And personally, my favorite kind has always been the emotionally complicated ones.

The men with history who don’t always know how to say the right things, but somehow manage to show love in quieter ways instead.

The ones carrying burdens they rarely let anyone else see.

The ones still trying to figure themselves out too.

These are the kinds of characters that have always stayed with me.

And maybe that’s why I’ve always loved second-chance romances so much.

Because there’s something beautiful about characters finding each other again after life, heartbreak, and growth have changed them. Characters with history, shared moments, and unfinished conversations.

Because the best relationships, both in stories and in life, aren’t built around perfection.

They’re built around growth.

I think, both as readers and writers, we connect most deeply with characters who remind us of ourselves in some way.

Not because they have it all together.

But because they don’t.

Those are the characters I love reading.

And they’re the ones I feel called to write.
